+ Position Overview

The Director of Technology Strategy (DTS) is responsible for creating value for MxDís industry members and primary partner, the U.S. Department of Defense.† The Director of Technology Strategy does this by intersecting member needs with emerging technologies and leading the definition of compelling R&D projects that accelerate the adoption of digital manufacturing and design capabilities.† This role leads in the development and promotion of a technology vision and roadmap that maximizes the Instituteís value creation.

+ Key Responsibilities

  • Technology Vision, Strategy & Roadmap
    • Develop and communicate a clear MxD technology strategy and roadmap, including development of the annual Strategic Investment Plan (SIP), with input from MxD partners and stakeholders to ensure that it meets the needs of industry and government partners and supports the organizationís business plan.†
    • Align and coordinate technology roadmaps/portfolios with relevant government, university, and industry partners, evaluating potential opportunities and threats from emerging technologies.
    • Serve as MxDís principal technology subject matter expert, providing strategic and tactical direction to internal teams as well as partners.
    • Cultivate relationships with external subject matter experts and partners from industry, academia and government
    • Coordinate the MxD Technology Advisory Committee (TAC; comprised of subject matter experts from among our industry, academic and government partners).
    • Establish and oversee a set of subject specific agile tech teams, comprised of external domain experts who MxD can leverage to expand our scope of relevant technical domain expertise, pressure test TAC recommendations, and advise on future direction.
  • Product Delivery, Portfolio Strategy & Value Creation
    • Support the engagement of MxD members around the project portfolio.† Facilitate the definition of R&D projects that align with the Instituteís selection criteria and strategic direction while addressing high value problem areas faced by DoD or Tier 1 & 2 Industry members.
    • Develop a strategic framework for portfolio composition (i.e., technology thrust, project type/duration, technology readiness/risk, etc.) and management.
    • Work with the Vice President of Projects and Engineering to support the implementation plan for the SIP, including project development and partner team curation.
    • Collaborate with MxDís technical resources (Project Innovation Engineers, Future Factory team, and Workshop development team) to cause all activities to contribute to valuable projects with deployable outcomes.
    • Support the Vice President of Engagement and the Executive Director in delivering value to partners and customers pursuant to the Membership Agreement, Cooperative Agreement, and other such contracts.
    • Support project evaluation activities, ensuring clear value propositions for each project and regular assessment of project deliverables and impact potential.
    • Identify emerging technology solutions from among project portfolio, partner portfolio, and startup community to aid members in deploying the Instituteís R&D outcomes
    • Help MxD shift its competencies from traditional project management to that of value-added partner, who can advise on technology trends and insights.
    • Create and evaluate the high-level business case for each project, including plans for commercialization or adoption.† Disseminate impact case studies.
    • Identify valuable project outcomes and work with project innovation engineers and external communications team members to articulate these benefits to members.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert, representing the organization externally, including conferences and partner presentations, and engaging a broad set of stakeholders.

+ Position Requirements

  • Degree: Bachelorís of Science degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering or equivalent.† Masters of Business Administration or equivalent.
  • Years of experience: 15+ years of experience across a wide variety of functions in the product lifecycle, ideally including R&D, product development engineering, manufacturing and supplier management, product management, strategy, business development.† Experience developing and building products involving a variety of technical disciplines (mechanical structures, electronics, software, firmware, etc.)í
  • Technical capabilities: Proven track record in developing and successfully launching new products. Evidence of creative problem-solving, intellectual property creation and management and successfully managing risk in R&D.
  • Management experience: Success managing teams of engineers, product managers, manufacturing operations staff. P&L responsibility, business case development and evidence of recruiting and nurturing teams is preferred.
